Food: Homemade Fish & Chips

fish and chipsYesterday we were walking through Greenwich and stumbled upon a fabulous little street with a local cheese shop, butcher, fishmonger and a flower shop. With this discover came the desire to make our own homemade fish and chips.

Following the always great guidance of Jamie Oliver, we successful made our first batch of homemade fish and chips!

A few notes for the narrowboat adaptation.

1. We clearly do not have room for a fryer so we just used the largest soup pan and it worked great! Only filled it to a little under half.

2. The first round of batter was too thick and the oil was too hot. So we had really burnt beer donuts around raw fish. By adding more beer to the mixture and turning the burner to gas mark 2 made them come out perfect.

3. When we were looking for fish, we were recommended cod cheeks. They were really good and much easier to fry as they are much smaller then a fillet.

4. Because we wanted to be super cautious, any time we put a new batch into the pan of oil we turned off the stove and gas. Just our way of hopefully not starting a fire. And we also read the directions on the fire blanket and extinguisher. But it is so true to be careful as the oil is so hot! Success we only had the smoke detector go off, which happens almost anytime we cook!

I would recommend for anyone to try! Very good and fun to make.
